Post subject:  Error message whilst trying to post

I just lost a post. This is the message that I got:
Quote:
General Error
SQL ERROR [ mysql4 ]

Data too long for column 'post_text' at row 1 [1406]

An SQL error occurred while fetching this page. Please contact the Board Administrator if this problem persists.

I've tried to post the same message a few times now and am still getting the same error message. Is it because my post is too long?

It does seem to be saying that your post is too long. I've not seen that before though.

Ok, no probs. It doesn't really matter now anyway. I was looking for feedback on something, but ran it past a friend instead. The post isn't what I consider long (in comparison to others) but it just didn't seem to want to go through. Are there restrictions on post-length in the various parts of the board? Was trying to post in On The Couch?

There shouldn't be any special restrictions on post length in different sections. It was an "SQL error" which means the database didn't like it. I'm not doing to try to do anything unless it becomes a more widespread problem.

This message displays next to every post/reply box:
Quote:
Message body:
Enter your message here, it may contain no more than 60,000 characters.

When in doubt, I'll usually copy my post into a fresh Word document and use Tools, Word Count to check how many characters I've got in there. It's not terribly difficult (for me and some other folks, I think) to hit 60,000 characters in one sitting.

Same error message whilst trying to post in OTB.

Pages = 1
Words = 350
Characters (no spaces) = 1589
Characters (with spaces) = 1939
Paragraphs = 5
Lines = 22

Nowhere near 60,000 characters. Could the problem be due to typing the post in a word document, then copying and pasting it onto the board? The last time this happened, I also had pasted the post from a word document.

If you're using any coding that requires " marks, then there might be a problem with the display though I can't imagine it would be enough to cause the error you describe.

In Word, the " marks go all slanty which, when copied over to the board, don't tell the software to do anything.

Again, I can't imagine how this would cause the problem you describe unless you have any other oddly laid out characters copied over that somehow mess with the post's formatting to such a degree, like maybe an inadvertent SQL or HTML command.

Does the error only happen when you type first in Word and then copy/paste to the board?

========================================================

Alrighty then, I think we have our answer. I had a copied/pasted quote sample included to point to and it showed okay in preview but then when I hit submit, I too got the SQL error.

I do believe it's something to do with the copy/paste of Word.

Can you try to use Word Pad instead? I believe the RTF format is a lot more plain than the DOC format which may be hiding gremlins that are at odds with the software.
