greetings,

am looking into how to help daughter (almost 14) deal with hearing voices and seeing shadows out of the corner of her eyes. she has been dx w/odd, mdd and emerging bpd.

this has been going on for some time now. she has been on prozac and abilify...currently 7.5mg. abilify after having cut it down from 15mg. psychiatrist wants to increase abilify again. not sure that is a good idea. she was hearing voices when on 10mg, 15mg and 7.5mg....don't see how increasing the dosage will address this issue. am trying to research causes of this and meds that might help.

daughter describes voices as seeming to come from outside her head....call her name. this has lessened from 2 months ago when the abilify was decreased. she says that lately she has not seen any shadows...

she is currently in a rtc and getting much much help...not nearly as depressed or angry. doing very well there!

my questions: is this common for people w/bpd? what do you attribute it to? ie: anxiety, depression, et.
did you take any meds that seemed to make it stop?

daughter says she wants it to stop...it scares her.

thanks for your help.

I'm not quite sure what ODD is or what MDD is or what RTC stands for but if these auditory hallucinations are new, it might be a reaction to a medication. (Worst case, I believe auditory hallucinations are common for schizophrenia.) Have you checked CrazyMeds.us for the meds she is currently taking? http://www.crazymeds.us/

ODD = oppositional defiant disorder
MDD = major depressive disorder
RTC = residential treatment center

I think.

I am not familiar at all with BPD being associated directly with any hallucinations. I do recall a woman who was hospitalized at the same time I was who was diagnosed with "psychotic depression," but I don't know if her psychosis included hallucinations.

If it were my kid, I think that since her symptoms have decreased -- even if it's gradual and incomplete -- with her current dose, I'd leave it alone for a while and see what happens. If they start to increase again, then I'd look into another change. That's just me, though, and I'm not a professional. I just think sometimes drugs get changed too quickly. Dose adjustments - fine. True adverse reactions - need to stop. But the process of going off one medication and starting another can be really stressful, both physically and emotionally. Sometimes I think the brain gets really confused, and it's all a big mess.

I'm glad she's making some progress!

She sounds EXACTLY like I was as a teenager. (Except the ODD). I still get visual hallucinations, though very rarely. (Faces, flowers, colours). And shadows. Also the feeling of moving when I'm stationary. (sp)

I have had psychotic depression. My symptoms got much worse after having a baby. I've always needed anti psychotics in the ten years since giving birth, even though I did not have fully blown psychosis prior. I do have MDD.

And I think too, that my daughter (although autistic) may be showing early signs of some kind of mental illness..she is convinced there is a rabbit, baby and ball down the street. She is adamant, in fact, to the point of trying to run down at night & me having to tackle her off the street. She will be screaming blue murder, but then ten minutes later be giggling and baby talking to me like nothing had ever happened.

Let us know how your daughter gets on. :)

And yes, I had someone "calling my name".. moreso any place where there was a high level of noise such as a video game arcade ( noise causes me a lot of anxiety).

That reminds me of something I saw on TV about a girl with childhood schizophrenia. It's extremely rare in children, but does happen.

Interesting..I wish I had seen that documentary.

I'm not "worried" - yet - she is normal and even bright in so many areas, but there are definitely cracks.

thank you tigerlily for sharing some of your story with me.

i had a phone conference w/her t and pdoc at the rtc. after much discussion we came to the conclusion that my daughter will be taken off of the abilify to get a baseline for determining her progress and seeing where she is currently w/her dbt...the pdoc really didn't like this idea...wanted to know what plan b will be when it all fails.......oh boy...anyway...he suggested that my d be brought into the conversation so they would call me back when she joined them...well they called back about 15 min. later after my d had left the room..not happy about that...the therapist then told me that my d said she is feeling angry lately (no one has seen this at the rtc) and she would like to increase the abilify because she would rather be tired from it than be angry..and that she would rather hear the voices than be angry...that she could deal with it...? a complete turn around on my d's part when it comes to the voices and a complete turn around on the part of the pdoc and the t who just finished telling me that she was going to be taken off of the abilify slowly to get a baseline reading.....
i emailed the t today that i was not pleased w/the way this all came down....that i want a complete evaluation done to see what they uncover...it reminds me of the old saying "why didn't you tell me the house was on fire when i talked to you on the phone?" answer: "because you didn't ask me"....i want to know what else may be going on in my d's head that she doesn't readily offer up...
the t is going to call me tomorrow to discuss what happened during the conference.........we will see what else comes to light...there are still some pieces to this puzzle that are missing.

tigerlily....was your depression obvious and severe when you experienced the psychotic features? my d's depression is not obvious nor severe...in the past...before going to the rtc....it was much worse...not anymore...she is a happy girl...yet the "voices" though less frequent...heard only when it is very quiet...still linger...she says she no longer sees shadows....

the name of the little girl w/childhood schizophrenia is January...this program is still shown from time to time on the discovery channel. it is a fascinating and sad story...she is blessed to have such a loving family.

i will update this thread as things progress...thanks for your time and effort.

Sweet little January.. no, my daughter is nothing like Jani. That illness makes my baby look like a piece of cake. Yes, those are devoted parents. We do what we have to, don't we.

Yes, my depression was obvious and severe - I had stopped eating completely and ended up being taken in to hospital, very confused and disoriented..thought there were cameras on me and a bunch of other stuff. (The full psychosis). The later, less severe ones I could hide more easily and even drive and do normal things. I remember having a hallucination all night..just a blue giant flower, then got up and drove the next morning. It seems so crazy now, but at my worst I won't drive at all.

I'd forgotten about my post altogether.. keep having memory blanks and have to go through them again. I used to hate when I was young having to have that many specialists and doctors and crap! I hope she's having some fun in between. I wonder if you'd get more info on a conduct disorder forum? My friend has a CD child..
