Does anyone do this or have a history of doing it? Is it a BPD thing? When my bpd was at its worst, in high school, I wanted nothing to do with the rest of the world. All I did was watch tv, binge eat, and pull my hair out to numb the pain :(

Today (6 yrs later) it is not nearly as bad, it feels like a 180 actually, but I still a lot of times just get too overwhelmed and want to retreat and block out the world. This has made it almost impossible to work in the past.

Jovie,

My bpd has gotten much less pronouced over the years....I'm 64 now. I think that as I've aged I've become more able to be more objective about my thinking and behavior....I can see where certain ideas about things are not condusive to being happy. I doubt that I'd even be diagnosed as bpd now, but there are times when that thinking does creep in, usually under stress, but it does not "overtake" me as it used to. You are getting help now when you're young and are much more open to changing than I was at your age. I really believe you will be OK.

I actually dropped out of high school at 17 because I just couldn't cope with things at home or in school. I did finish and got a BA in history a long time later, but I did do it, and there was definitely a time when absolutely nobody would have thought I could do it....most of all me. For me recovery has taken almost a lifetime, but I can still be so happy with my life now....no matter how much time there is left. I'm just happy for you that you're getting the help you need now. Treatment for bpd is so much more advanced than when I was a kid.

Just hope you can be as happy with your life.

dagwood

Thank you very much dagwood, those words of encouragement mean a lot to me. A lot of times I feel like a "normal" person who's simply buried underneath a ton of BPD symptoms. If that makes sense? I really, truly hope you're right - that I will be OK.
