:ranton [b]I know I'm not the only one out there with no insurance. How do you who are in the same boat get what you need for your symptoms? As a nurse, you would think I have good healthcare insurance, but I dropped it because it was so ridiculously crappy that I end up paying more out of pocket WITH it than WITHOUT it!
I just hope I don't need major medical attention anytime soon. In the meantime, I go to the community mental health clinic (which is a trip because I usually run into a few of my mental health patients from the unit I work on). I begged and pleaded for help with cost of medications but still desperately need cognitive therapy which they don't offer. Any tips? I just cannot afford 90 dollar therapy once a week.

Could you afford therapy less often, say once every two weeks? That's what I ended up doing and it worked out well for me. :) I wish I hadn't needed to pay out of my own pocket, but it was worth it!

The first therapist I went to see was part of a group called Pastoral Counseling. Although most of the counselors were ministers and rabbis, the counseling did not revolve around religion in the least, or even spirituality.

The good part is they calculate counseling fees on a sliding scale. The great part is that some of the best counseling I've gotten has been from that guy and, later on, a friend who also happened to be a pastor with a background in psychological therapy. The not-so-great part is that I had to arm-wrestle that first therapist to write a recommendation for me to apply for an NIMH study. But then, that was about 25 years ago... :eyeroll

I lost a baby 31 years ago. I was devastated. We had no money so I went to Jewish Family Services and saw a Social Worker on a sliding fee scale. I think back then I paid about $8.00 a visit. I went once a week. I'm sure fees have gone up, but a lot of these "charities" have social workers and counselors who will see patients on a sliding fee scale.
